This morning David and I went to the recycle centre to drop off some unwanted belongings and while we were there I looked around to see if I could spot any photo opportunities. Over the next few days I will post some photos at the centre.
You can buy just about any pre-owned trash or treasure including bric-a-brac, books, electrical goods, furniture building materials, bicycles, clothes etc. you name it and you can find it there. People drop off their unwanted items and of course anything sold in the centre saves it from becoming landfill.
Of course, we looked around to see if we could find any bargains too and David came home with a box of cable clamps and I came home with a book. Total cost $2 so definitely a bargain.
Nice image and sounds like a good idea. Here, we take it to recycling, but never really know what happens to the items afterwards. When we lived in Paris there was a monthly pick up of large household items. You put them out on the pavement the night before, and people used to trawl the streets, picking up whatever they wanted. It was a form of recycling and so much better than going to landfill. We often put things out and found nothing left in the morning! That was a real success for all concerned!
@jamibann Yes we have kerbside pickups too but no idea what happens to those items. Like you when we have a Council pick up people go round to collect any items they want before they are collected by the Council.
The recycle centre though is next to the Council tip and is very popular with locals. I suppose anything that isn't sold will eventually end up in landfill but at least it has a chance of being reclaimed beforehand.
A very eyecatching sign, such a good idea, our dump recycles everything into separate skips and you have to pay to take building materials. Skips are checked through by the dump team so nothing gets missed, sometimes they are in there before you finish dumping!
These types of stores are really great. There are several around here run by Good Will, Salvation Army and one by the Seventh Day Adventists. Plus there are several thrift shops that also sell things at a low cost and people can get a commission if their item sells. You sure did get a bargain here- both in the shopping bag and in the camera!
@olivetreeann We have op shops like yours too run by the Salvsation Army, St Vincent de Paul, Red Cross, Lifeline etc and this one run by our local Council tip is very popular because they can house large items like old washing machines, lounge suites, furniture, old computers, televisions etc, not only smaller items and also building materials such as pavers reclaimed windows and doors etc.
