Workers Cottages - Morpeth by onewing

Workers Cottages - Morpeth

In the mid-19th century several single storey double cottages housed the families of workers who were employed at the shipping company wharves or on the railway in Morpeth. Here are two of the old workers cottages.

I am not sure if they are private residences or just historic buildings now, but they seem to be in good order apart from the rather rusty tin roof.

I suppose this photo will be suitable for the rust theme this month too.

Fabulous buildings but with a tin roof, I bet that was noisy when it rained.

I love that sound of rain on the tin roof. Beautiful old building well captured.

Lovely patterns and textures here.

Charming old building, love the roof :-)

A lovely building, almost in Queensland style. It is in quite good condition, except the roof.

Great looking building. Definitely in good condition (at least from the outside). :)

Surprisingly deep roof Babs! Just the basics I suppose...there are two there so two up two down?

Great capture! The rust on the roof adds charm to the photo!

Interesting historical shot. I'm interested that the roof looks so rusty while the rest of the house appears to be well kept.

Lovely POV and what a great building, love the textures and soft colours, lovely image Babs;)

It looks very well maintained, apart from the roof. I can just imagine the noise inside when it rains!

Lovely image - I don't think I would mind living there!

They look well cared for. Many families would have passed thru those doors.

Lovely shot Babs, there's a whole history out there in workers' housing. It'd make a fascinating study.

@creampuff Yes it does get a bit noisy when it rains on a tin roof. There are a lot of tin roof buildings out here. It is even noisier when it hails too. We get hail stones as big as tennis balls sometimes.

@happypat I must check out the inside next time we are at Morpeth. They are only single storey cottages. So probably more two along rather than up and down. ha ha.

Thanks so much. There are lots of wonderful old buildings in Morpeth and these workers cottages have such character. There were probably families with about 10 children in each of those houses in the 1800's.

@dolphin Thanks Molly. I think the roof must be the original and I imagine it is quite expensive to replace it. It will still be watertight though with no leaks, so I suppose it will be left until the rainwater becomes a problem.

@kwiksilver Yes, Gillian it does get a bit noisy when it rains. We lived in a house with a tin roof for 3 months when we moved to NSW from Victoria while we were in the process of buying a house up here. It was very noisy and we had a hail storm one night and that was deafening.

I'm glad many people keep the workers cottages in (close) to original condition. They typically are quite beautiful - this one surely is!

@gigiflower Thanks Sam. Morpeth really tries to keep the atmosphere of the place as it was in days gone by.

Nice shot, wouldn't want to live there though. I bet they could Herat everything from next door!
