In the mid-19th century several single storey double cottages housed the families of workers who were employed at the shipping company wharves or on the railway in Morpeth. Here are two of the old workers cottages.
I am not sure if they are private residences or just historic buildings now, but they seem to be in good order apart from the rather rusty tin roof.
I suppose this photo will be suitable for the rust theme this month too.
@creampuff Yes it does get a bit noisy when it rains on a tin roof. There are a lot of tin roof buildings out here. It is even noisier when it hails too. We get hail stones as big as tennis balls sometimes.
@happypat I must check out the inside next time we are at Morpeth. They are only single storey cottages. So probably more two along rather than up and down. ha ha.
@dolphin Thanks Molly. I think the roof must be the original and I imagine it is quite expensive to replace it. It will still be watertight though with no leaks, so I suppose it will be left until the rainwater becomes a problem.
@kwiksilver Yes, Gillian it does get a bit noisy when it rains. We lived in a house with a tin roof for 3 months when we moved to NSW from Victoria while we were in the process of buying a house up here. It was very noisy and we had a hail storm one night and that was deafening.
Thanks so much. There are lots of wonderful old buildings in Morpeth and these workers cottages have such character. There were probably families with about 10 children in each of those houses in the 1800's.
