Eleanor Cross - Geddington
This is a very English Memorial. There were 12 Eleanor crosses built - firstly of wood and then lavishly of decorated stone. There are now just 3 left. King Edward 1 had the crosses erected between 1291 and 1294 in memory of his wife Eleanor of Castile, marking the nightly resting places along the route taken when her body was transported to London.
@gazbadger@mercuria@jesperani@davidgnc@yonnie@jodimuli@sansjuan@kittikat Many thanks for your lovely comments!! Its a lovely story which I remember learning at school - I always loved history!! I have checked on Wikepedia and there are only 3 of the original crosses left - Geddington, Hardingstone (also Northamptonshire) and Waltham Cross. Some of the other crosses have pieces left or have been completely destroyed. There is a replica cross outside Charing Cross Station, London.
Eleanor's final resting place is Westminster Abbey where she was buried at the feet of her father-in-law King Henry 111.
