What's in a name? by pamknowler

What's in a name?

I have driven past this signpost hundreds of times over the years and it has always made me laugh. The village is called Woolfardisworthy but locals call it Woolsery. Why I ask myself do they keep the long name on all the sign posts when everyone calls it Woolsery?

Today I turned down the lane towards Woolfardisworthy which says 1 1/2 miles on the signpost. I think the saying is a "Country mile" or they were drunk when they measured it. The village is at least 3 miles from this signpost!! Anyway there is a lovely village shop and post office where I could buy some fresh bread and milk.
That is a strange name for a village!

How strange....must be tradition! No wonder they shortened it! 😀

What a mouthful, no wonder the name is shortened.

I guess someone or someones important insisted on 'tradition' being preserved. Lovely story.
