Peter, I have no knowledge nor experience of this technique, so please don't pay any attention to what I am about to say! I just want to share my layman's impression! I think, from examples that I have seen, that the choice of subject and the composition is really what makes or breaks this kind of picture. Colour and backlight certainly seem to work. In your picture, the bottom third (against the dark background) does not work as well as the top 2/3. Perhaps one should forget all about the usual and natural landscape composition and go overboard with artistic composition. But I would love to see more and learn more from you before attempting it myself!
Thanks for you comments Eric - some monitors show the bottom darker than others - it's a subtle dark blue. You are right about using this technique on certain images - doesn't work well on all. The only limitation is your imagination with ICM techniques - if you google it, you'll see lots of ideas. @ericdibosco
This is a beautiful photo of a sunrise. I do like sunrise and sunset photos. This shot is so pretty and even though I don't yet know what ICM means, I just like your photo.
