Southern Tradition by peggysirk

Southern Tradition

As a born and bred Southerner, I can't imagine starting a new year without the traditional New Year's Day dinner of ham, collard greens, black eyed peas and cornbread ~ for good luck and prosperity in the coming year. (The potato and onion casserole was thrown in for no reason other than it's delicious). My husband, Tom, who normally wouldn't touch collard greens if he was starving, will even eat one little bite on New Year's Day. I guess my Southern superstitions have rubbed off on him. :) Wishing you all good luck, prosperity and all things wonderful in 2012!
It all looks so delicious! Our midwestern tradition (at least in my house) is to scrounge around the refrigerator for all of the leftover New Year’s eve appetizers. I think I like yours better!

Great collage, Peggy. I envy this meal as I usually try to offer black eyed peas and greens to my family (though they never quite appreciate it). Today was a busy one moving from the cottage to the city trying to outrun a storm so the kids can catch their flight in the morning. So it was pizza for dinner tonight. Hmmm. . . hope we can still find some prosperity in the coming year.

@lisjam1 Leftover New Year's Eve appetizers works for me...sounds pretty yummy. I could live on things eaten with a toothpick or fingers. :) Happy 2012 to you, Lisa!

@barbsmith I think pizza for dinner is a wonderfully auspicious way to start the new year...as is time spent with family. I know you must have had a fabulous holiday with Brooke & Co. and I hope it's not long til you're together again!

@smith Sooo good to see you back, Bob!! The Smith family has been missed!! As demanding as this project can be at times, the connection with so many great people is so cool. I'm looking forward to your 2012 posts!

Interesting to read your list of dishes & some things I know are a typical American dish but have never tasted !! Black eyed peas & corn bread are fairly self ex planetary but I have no idea what collard greens are !! Does look good !!

@happypat Thanks, Pat! Collard greens are a leafy green vegetable similar to turnip greens, kale, or Swiss chard. I simmer them in water with a little piece of ham or bacon until they are nice and tender and oh so good. :)

@peggysirk @happypat I was thinking the same as Pat, it does sound scrumptious. Love the collage by the way!
