Strand Feeding/Fishing by peggysirk

Strand Feeding/Fishing

When my friends, Sheri and Nancy, and I were out at Botany Bay plantation/wildlife preserve we were lucky enough to witness a dolphin wrapping up a strand feeding episode in the marsh tidal creek. Actually I had no idea what the turbulence in the water by the shoreline was all about...I halfway expected a wayward alligator to come charging us. I've subsequently learned that dolphins in the tidal creeks of Georgia and South Carolina have learned to catch their prey by strand fishing/feeding...forcing schools of mullet or other fish on shore by creating bow waves. The dolphins then beach themselves to quickly grab what they can before flipping back into the water.

Three Good Things:
1. Wildlife preserves
2. A fun day with friends
3. Salt marshes
Interesting to see Peggy & I have learnt something! I have only ever seen dolphins swimming so it's good to learn they have a skill like this. Hope you had a great holiday!
