Wheels in the tide - dawn

...Windang Island.

Alternate views in main album at blue hour http://365project.org/peterdegraaff/365/2012-04-29 and golden hour http://365project.org/peterdegraaff/themes/2012-04-29

The abandoned bogey wheels are from the 1890s when "attempts were made to make Lake Illawarra a deep sea port. A jetty was to be built on the western shore of the lake to allow the export of coal from the Ocean View colliery. As part of this scheme, a channel was to be dredged through the entrance of Lake Illawarra to allow ocean-going boats to reach the lake jetty. The channel was to be four and a half miles long and 430 feet wide between the breakwaters at the lake entrance. A railway line was built on Windang Island to carry rock cut from the south-western side of the Island through to the mainland side of the Island. This rock was used to build the breakwaters, the remains of which can be seen today. The project was abandoned in 1902 because of the problem of drifting sand blocking the lake entrance channel." cf http://www.lia.nsw.gov.au/the_lake/history_of_lake_illawarra
It seems so silly to just keep typing "beautiful", shot after shot, but it's true!

Also a Fav! Totally different, yet all I said about the other one is true for this one as well. These photos almost take my breath away...
April 29th, 2012
Wow! I love this one, too! Another FAV and pinning, too!
April 29th, 2012
I think I like this one best of the series
April 29th, 2012
oooh, the time lapse is very magical. The water looks like the clouds are extended all the way to the axle.
April 29th, 2012
@tigerdreamer I like them all. There were some even longer exposures in the pre-dawn twilight. Couldn't sleep so I thought I would go and take some photos. Half an hour after the sunrise a storm and cold front came through and it started raining.
April 29th, 2012
More subtle and almost dreamlike
April 29th, 2012
Wow these shots are all beautiful...the lighting and tides all different...you are amazing!!!I like this one best :)
April 29th, 2012
Well ... this one pulls me right in. The COLOR! Everything about the color tones. What did you do to this one, Peter? Just change the time of day? Did you process differently? This is a FAV.
April 29th, 2012
@karenann all processed the same way. The only difference is in that two are taken facing away from sun and one towards. It is quite amazing how quickly the colour changes. An earlier photo taken in the twilight is even bluer. Decided to post a s a series because it really does illustrate the difference that takes place with natural light in around dawn. I couldnt decide between them bacause each is so different. I love soft blues as you know. The blue hour and dawn photo had longer exposures
April 29th, 2012
I feel a story there, well done
April 29th, 2012
Ditto to what Ann H LeFevre said!! FAV
April 29th, 2012
Beautiful
April 29th, 2012
Dreamy photo.

Do you ever use graduated ND filters to lower the exposure of the sky, Peter? I don't but would like to if I had a flat horizon like you do. In all three shots your sky is overexposed and it's such a shame because they are beautiful images. I like this one in particular for the composition. You're so good at land and seascapes. Very talented.
April 29th, 2012
@aspada I lost my graduated one in Canberra last week and funnily enough had just ordered a new one online before read this
April 29th, 2012
@peterdegraaff Ah... I thought it was strange to see the inconsistency in the sky quality. What brand do you use?
April 29th, 2012
Love the reflected wheels... Great capture!
April 29th, 2012
@aspada I have just ordered a Tiffen graduated but have a variety of others. Don't mind the over-exposure though
April 29th, 2012
Lovely
April 29th, 2012
I like this one the best - great soft colors and wonderful reflection of the wheels, which... by the way... what are they doing there?
And... good for you... if you can't sleep you get up and be productive! If I can't sleep (which truly is rare for me) I lie awake and stress over whatever it is that's going on. Perhaps I should try getting up and taking some photographs!
April 29th, 2012
I suppose it does highlight the perfection of the rest of the photograph :)
April 29th, 2012
@aspada I could have cropped the little bit of blue along top out but overexposure highlights the clouds rolling across. Unbelievably it was raining half an hour or so after this
April 29th, 2012
love the look of the water in the long exposure
April 29th, 2012
Like the effect in this one too. Will have to get a filter and tripod and head back to the coast at some point
April 29th, 2012
@fueast Am really liking filters and working in m mode. Took a while to figure out but is easy on get hang of it

eva
This is a superb capture. Love it! A fav.
April 29th, 2012
@peterdegraaff I would have gotten rid of it too... either with a crop or an overexposed brush or something similar.
April 29th, 2012
Beautiful Photo!
April 29th, 2012
I love these long exposure shots Peter, beautiful :-)
April 29th, 2012
I love all of this - the cool sky contrasts beautifully with the land and sea and leads your focus to the detail there.. and the tinge of blue above softens it and frames it. Super. You're so clever. :)
April 29th, 2012
stunning
April 29th, 2012
....wow...love this:)))))fav

All your shots are so professional (and beautiful)!
April 29th, 2012
This one is stunning too but I think I like the blue one better.
April 29th, 2012
Love the reflection of the wheels in the water - almost looks like a mist rolling in!
April 29th, 2012
Oh, I love this one too.
April 29th, 2012
Wow! I've added this spot to the list of places I want to go to. Simply stunning!
April 29th, 2012
Gorgeous shot Peter!! Love your long exposure..I really need to try that.
I NEED to know why those wheels are there!
April 29th, 2012
Beautiful.

Gorgeous, love he reflections.
April 29th, 2012
Love it...fav!
April 29th, 2012
Hum, this one is even better. Love the light and reflections. A somber take on wheels being left in the mud.
April 29th, 2012
Beautiful!!! It's so serene!! :D
April 29th, 2012
Beautiful shot! Has a mystical feel to it!

@pjonas @shutterbugger Have added in histrorical information and link above. quite an interesting read. The area where I live was one of the first settled/colonied by Europeans in Australia. We have an exceptionally high rainfall, because of of escarpment behind rising to 1600 feet not far from coast, which I will try to post a shot of today taken from Windang Island. This means subtropical rainforests, waterfalls and a big lake between escarpment and sea. Where I live Shellharbour was named after aboriginal shell midddens. BTW Patty, taking and making photographs takes my mind off things as I focus on the world around me. I like doing these kinds of shots Jenn because it is a completely different process, requiring composition of scene with tripod, taking photo and waiting for camera to process. This can take up to two minutes depending on length of exposure.
April 29th, 2012
so stunning!
April 30th, 2012
All three versions are gorgeous but love this the best.

This is quite a dramatic picture but peaceful too. Nice that you put the history link in.

Fav! Your long exposure water shots are so wonderful! Did you use an ND filter? It's great to compare the three different versions of the same view. They are all stunning but this is my personal Fav!
May 1st, 2012
@bmnorthernlight Yes, I used a variable ND filter
May 1st, 2012
