The abandoned bogey wheels are from the 1890s when "attempts were made to make Lake Illawarra a deep sea port. A jetty was to be built on the western shore of the lake to allow the export of coal from the Ocean View colliery. As part of this scheme, a channel was to be dredged through the entrance of Lake Illawarra to allow ocean-going boats to reach the lake jetty. The channel was to be four and a half miles long and 430 feet wide between the breakwaters at the lake entrance. A railway line was built on Windang Island to carry rock cut from the south-western side of the Island through to the mainland side of the Island. This rock was used to build the breakwaters, the remains of which can be seen today. The project was abandoned in 1902 because of the problem of drifting sand blocking the lake entrance channel." cf http://www.lia.nsw.gov.au/the_lake/history_of_lake_illawarra
@tigerdreamer I like them all. There were some even longer exposures in the pre-dawn twilight. Couldn't sleep so I thought I would go and take some photos. Half an hour after the sunrise a storm and cold front came through and it started raining.
Well ... this one pulls me right in. The COLOR! Everything about the color tones. What did you do to this one, Peter? Just change the time of day? Did you process differently? This is a FAV.
@karenann all processed the same way. The only difference is in that two are taken facing away from sun and one towards. It is quite amazing how quickly the colour changes. An earlier photo taken in the twilight is even bluer. Decided to post a s a series because it really does illustrate the difference that takes place with natural light in around dawn. I couldnt decide between them bacause each is so different. I love soft blues as you know. The blue hour and dawn photo had longer exposures
Do you ever use graduated ND filters to lower the exposure of the sky, Peter? I don't but would like to if I had a flat horizon like you do. In all three shots your sky is overexposed and it's such a shame because they are beautiful images. I like this one in particular for the composition. You're so good at land and seascapes. Very talented.
I like this one the best - great soft colors and wonderful reflection of the wheels, which... by the way... what are they doing there?
And... good for you... if you can't sleep you get up and be productive! If I can't sleep (which truly is rare for me) I lie awake and stress over whatever it is that's going on. Perhaps I should try getting up and taking some photographs!
@aspada I could have cropped the little bit of blue along top out but overexposure highlights the clouds rolling across. Unbelievably it was raining half an hour or so after this
I love all of this - the cool sky contrasts beautifully with the land and sea and leads your focus to the detail there.. and the tinge of blue above softens it and frames it. Super. You're so clever. :)
@pjonas@shutterbugger Have added in histrorical information and link above. quite an interesting read. The area where I live was one of the first settled/colonied by Europeans in Australia. We have an exceptionally high rainfall, because of of escarpment behind rising to 1600 feet not far from coast, which I will try to post a shot of today taken from Windang Island. This means subtropical rainforests, waterfalls and a big lake between escarpment and sea. Where I live Shellharbour was named after aboriginal shell midddens. BTW Patty, taking and making photographs takes my mind off things as I focus on the world around me. I like doing these kinds of shots Jenn because it is a completely different process, requiring composition of scene with tripod, taking photo and waiting for camera to process. This can take up to two minutes depending on length of exposure.
Fav! Your long exposure water shots are so wonderful! Did you use an ND filter? It's great to compare the three different versions of the same view. They are all stunning but this is my personal Fav!

I NEED to know why those wheels are there!
