Much conflict as to whether this day is a celebration or the opposite to mark Captain Arthur Phillip and British colonists hoisting the Union Flag at Sydney Cove, New South Wales, 1788.
Nevertheless, we still get a public holiday. For now.
This picture seemed typically Aussie for today. Some street graffiti, labelled 'Merewether Aquarium, open 24/7' so we had to investigate and found a tunnel under the road to the beach, beautifully painted with an aquarium/ocean theme.
My first ever Australia Day that I celebrated was in 1980, with new mates, in Suffolk, who took me to see Gallipoli at a small cinema in town and then they laughed at me as I ate my pizza the English way! ( Knife and fork)! 5 years ago I was in WA, with one of those mates, on a beach celebrating / commemorating Invasion/Australia day!!
