In 1953 we did have a big storm , the dikes broke and the sea flooded the land . 1800 people die and 100.000 people lost there houses and everything they own. We say : that never again and started what we named : the Delta works, to save the country from disasters like this. One of the works is this dam. The Oysterdam. It`s 10,5 Km ( 6.5 miles) long dam to shelter the land from the river . It also connect two islands ( There is a road on top of it, not show on this pic ) Tholen and Zuidbeverland. The works started in 1979 and finish in 1989. The entrance of this water I did pic. on 07-29/30-2011
Some excellent engineering here, let us hope this type of disaster never again happens...thanks for sharing this with us, I have never seen a dike, or a dam do this magnitude...well presented Pyrrhula !
Great lines in this shot.. The colors are very nice as well.. It's sad that it was needed, but it's good that it's there after such a terrible loss of life..
