To dry the polders we have use windmills ,after that steam pumping-engine and to day electricity.
Windmills we still have a lot but also about ten /10 Steam engines
This is one of them,a small one, maintain by volunteers.
I visit this one last Friday on a meeting
@cabinfest@yonnie@judis@grannysue@sangwann We visited Holland many times before we worked out what 'polders' are! There is reference to them in my posting on 31st May : "This was to safeguard the low-lying land protected by dikes (or dykes) against the seawater from the North Sea. " For "low-lying land" read "polders", I changed these words from the extract I used because polders is not a commonly-used English word - though it is English, as pyrrhula rightly says!
@ivan gotcha! However.... If I'm understanding "polder" correctly, it is land that was once under water. I like the distinction from land that is simply low lying, which could be land that was not once under water. Its a great word! The low-lying really helped make it clear.....great explanation, thanks!!
Yes the Netherland is known for its polders. very interesting looking collage. I really like to see more of Holland this time around in Germany.
Middleburg and vicinity is easily reached from where we are. only a couple of hours drive (and we love drivng) It would interest me if you could give us some pointers as to interesting places around there..I can then goggle to read more about them.
