Luctor et Emergo

Last Sunday, my wife and I, get to the country to find the last of the flower fields. We get to a statue ( did n`t capture that) and this sign of an other great disaster happen to our country in February 1953.
The big flood. 1795 people died then.
The sign gives the high of water that flood all this ( and much more) land.
The responsible authorities did know this could be happen but did n`t take provisions ,they never `ve been sentence for it .
The tittle is the heraldry motto of this province ,
we still can use it.

Very interesting shot and what a terrible tragedy to happen. The water was really high.

Great journalism photo and narration. The 1953 flood was a tragic one in your country. I always amazes me and scares me how deep flood water can be. Where I grew up, we were sometimes cut off from other land by flood water.

Amazing shot and great detail in your story explaining the water levels. Hope the authorities have well thought out plans to deal with flooding now. Thanks for sharing :)

So interesting to hear about this tragedy and how many people lost their lives!!! Unbelievable disaster!!! Your photo is a lovely memorial to those who were lost in this flood.

Wow. So sad they knew it was a problem but did nothing to prevent it. Lovely shot and memorial to those who lost their lives.

This is a lovely memorial photo and that is indeed a trudged. If only preventative and safety measures had been put in place.

Sad but very nice photo.

Lovely shot. It's a sad but recurring theme that governments ignore known risks until they seriously affect people.

That must have been awful and thanks for sharing this photo and info. I used to work for KLM (ticket office) in the 60s and knew nothing about Zeeland. How interesting and thanks for the link. Unfortunately we never made it to Amsterdam because I became pregnant with my 1st born child and left KLM shortly before she was born.

Really interesting shot and information. England had the floods too in 1953, in East Anglia, low lying and flat, like Holland.

Such a tragic history behind this picture, thanks for sharing.

Wow that is high, so many people to lose their lives, very tragic

Super shot, and a fascinating reminder of the tragedy of 1953. Many died here in England too in 1953, but not so many as in your country. The story of the work done since then in your country to improve the defences is very impressive.

Nice pic and story. I checked out your link on the area. I was born in Michigan not far from Zeeland which was mentioned on Wikipedia.

My view is that authorities all over the world have much to answer for. A certain bleakness in this shot which is very atmospheric. Interesting too, thank you.

I knew nothing of this as a child, Ferry, so your retelling is a cautionary history lesson. It's chilling that when authorities have the warning information and fail to pass it to the populace, the result is all the tragic deaths. Thank you for sharing this as I'll now see the flag and understand the symbolism.

If the tragedy could only have been prevented. 1953, to years before I immigrated to this country. thank you for sharing this with us. I didn't know. found your link of utmost interest. great picture too and a great memorial. fav.
