In the old days the meadows where often barrier by hedges of thorn trees to keep the cattle`s in . There are n`t huge as this was not a necessary. But beside the roads (and dykes) they are also are a protection against the strong winds . They where much higher . The prune of the branches where use for fire woods.
After the big flood in 1953 many of them died but gladly there are still remains (or new planted) .
The hedges around the orchards are mainly from poplar trees ( there are exceptions)
The gate between the hedges is the entrance to the farmland and the wide of the hedges is about 2,5 mtrs (+/- 8 feet)
Thank you for all you beautiful pic.`s, you visits , the great comments and the fav`s . Have enjoy it all very much. Best wishes for this weekend and nex week.
Lovely photo. I like how the branches arch over the road. There are fewer hedges these days in my country. I miss the hedges. My childhood farm had a multiflora rose hedge around the cattle pastures. The hedges in your photo are very tall compared to the multiflora rose hedges. Have a great weekend!
This lovely tree tunnel makes for a great place to walk or ride your bike!!! The two in the distance give a feel for how tall the trees really are. Great capture of these amazing hedges!!! We call them "Wind Breaks" but it's basically the same thing.
Took a closer look and saw the bike riders quite clearly. great picture of the huge hedges. yes this would be a great road for a walk or as we see, for riding your bike.
