Raphanus sativus subsp. oleiferus by pyrrhula

Raphanus sativus subsp. oleiferus

The story behind this pic.
It looks beautiful but there is a sad story behind this pic., told to me by a farmer nearby.
In spring the owner seeded onions . Badly, a big hailstorm did destroy the young new grow. The good thing was the farmer did have a assurance for this and they pay out. Advise him to plough the field , make the best out of it and seed it with green manure plants for this summer. The Dutch name for the plants: Bladrammenas

Goed verhaal. Waar wordt dit gewas voor gebruikt?

They're not onions, but they're lovely little flowers. Glad the farmer's insurance paid for the loss of his onion crop.
P.S. Thanks for your kind comment on my crevice shot.

@gijsje Green manure = Groen bemesting . Once every four years the farmer chance the crops. Often the fourth year he grow a green manure plant to fertilize and healthy the soil. This plants are not mean to be harvest but will be ploughed into the ground.

Interesting information on the ins and outs of farming. Sorry to see his onions were a failure but he seems to have taken the advice of the insurance company and although these are not a money crop, they certainly are pretty!

Interessant om te lezen over de groene bemesting. Schattig plantje, jammer dat het wordt ondergeploegd ;-)

A beautiful field of flowers and nice to see a close-up in the insert. Interesting to hear the background story too - farmers can often face serious problems with their crops, and fortunate that in this case he had insurance.
