There are two stories that explain why the statue on the fountain is a dragon.
Dragon of a city
's-Hertogenbosch used to be - and now partly - in a swamp area. The area around the city was easy to flood. The city was therefore also called the Swamp Dragon and was considered an impregnable fortress. In 1629 Frederik Hendrik wanted to conquer 's-Hertogenbosch. The inhabitants of the 's-Hertogenbosch were initially not worried because of the marshy underground, but by grinding the area around the city dry Frederik Hendrik managed to take the city.
Another story is that it is because of the surname of the legator . The dragon holds a shield with the family weapon of Bosch van Drakenstein .
I was lucky to be there for the Hieronymus Bosch exhibit in 2016 http://boschexpo.hetnoordbrabantsmuseum.nl/en I will never see a better art exhibition again in my lifetime. Also, I miss eating Bosch bollens!
A beautiful collage of different shots to show the city. I enjoyed reading the story. Many cities around Europe boast of their own dragon - as if the world was full of them at one particular era. And each city has a lovely story about its dragon.
