Today is the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust. Elie Wiesel, survivor of the Holocaust, said: “What is abnormal is that I am normal. That I survived the Holocaust and went on to love beautiful girls, to talk, to write, to have toast and tea and live my life – that is what is abnormal.” My mother in law was a survivor of Auschwitz, I don’t think life for her was ever ‘normal’ again.
Lovely and somber reminder. I've been watching many programs on PBS about the holocaust lately. Such HORROR and still some people are hell bent on repeating it. Something is broken inside those who would do such things to other human beings.
A lovely shot to mark the holocaust. I read an interesting book last year about the role that railways played in the holocaust, which also told a great deal about the horrors of the camps. Hard to imagine that such evil could happen, yet the evidence is clear. A terrible time.
A beautiful shot. The world needs to remember. I use to have a friend whos husband survived the holocaust, but his whole family was killed. Her stories were frightening.
A lovely shot to mark the holocaust. We visited Belsen whilst stationed in Berlin. A moving experience & yet still there are those that say it never happened, despite documentation, written & pictorial & personal testimonies . Humanity unfortunately still repeats past history & atrocities. Days like today must continue.
Nice capture and remembrance of such a horrific time. I visited a large library of the Holocaust. The letters I read and the photos I saw were so disturbing. I cannot imagine the nightmares the survivors must have.
It is an important day in Poland. In the Shadow of the War in Ukraine has a very bitter taste. You probably don't know yet, but in December a negative with photos from the Warsaw Ghetto was found. Made by a fireman, not the Nazis. 12 prints are at the Holocaust Museum in Washington. Now there is a negative with 33 photos.
@haskar a very bitter taste indeed - thank you for this information - we have walked around the Ghetto area in Warsaw and we’ve seen the prints in Washington. Will look
Out for the announcement about this negative.
@dkellogg thank you - it’s very difficult when you get close to such Holocaust material not to feel horror at the atrocities which were committed. And that the lessons haven’t been learned …
On Rai Tv - the Italian national station I saw a documentary which included an Italian lady who described her sufferings and that of others from the time the persecution of Jews began to when she finally got out of Auswitz and started a new life. What sad times they were! I like your shot, simple but very effective.
They've been showing some interesting programs on our public tv this week. A shameful thing. What's more shameful are those who refuse to believe it happened.
We have friends who also have family that have survived to tell of the atrocities.
The world has not learnt enough, there are still so many inhuman actions going on.
Ian
