Wasn't sure whether to post this but it was one of only two shots I took today and also seemed appropriate for the artist challenge. The story is that we'd just left school full of the joys of the festive season when Jack took an accidental whack in the face from his sister's lunch bag (which had a thermos inside!). He is rather prone to a good nosebleed ( http://365project.org/rich57/3rd-album/2011-07-10). Anyway in case anyone's worried he looks a bit upset he did want a photo taking so he could see how he was looking and it helped him be a brave boy. The other photo I took was a few minutes later of him back to his normal bouncy self ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/rich57/6522007169/in/photostream)!
@fueast He was just stopped crying. A lovely passer-by stopped and said Santa would bring him a new nose for Xmas and if he didn't she'd get him one off eBay!
I have a few shots of my boys like this and they also don't mind me taking them - after the trauma, they like to see how 'bad' it was and it makes them feel brave. Poor lad. Makes a powerful shot!
Oh, poor Jack! Ususally I love his funny faces, but he looks so sad here with the big tear rolling down his face. Poor guy. Glad the recovery was quick.
@azza_l Yeah thought about it first. Jack was ok with it going up. Tbh it's not often I get a chance to photograph such rawness (thank god). But now I'm kind of committed to this lark it seemed almost wrong to not post..funnily enough I was thinking on my way to pick the kids up that my project is quite far from unsettling. Not that I'm planning on looking for a new direction!
You've outdone yourself richard. This is by far the best portrait i have seen 365 project (and flickr/picasa etc for that matter) to date. such a great capture. your boy is mighty brave too!
Bless, bless, bless - that tear is so sad! And if we didn't know the background you could tell a great story about street kids with it! Our Christmas holiday treat is taking my son to get his nose fixed - there are only so many major nosebleeds you can take a week even when they do get you out of assembly. Big Fav for me and I'm off to the other pic to cheer myself up!
You documented the situation beautifully. The tear is what caught my attention. Great kid you have and he will really like the candidness of this shot later on ...loved the after shot as well...all is well that ends well...
this is part of a child's life.
he is a brave boy and makes me remember my nose bleed era.
glad they stopped.
he sure does look happy in the next shot.
ouch that's an amazing shot, really captures childhood traumas - and he's made the popular page too with a bloody nose - if he manages to damage the blood vessels badly enough you can get them to bleed on demand pretty much
@judithg I managed to do my nose in, accidentally, really bad knock as a teenager, and it took forever for the blood vessels to heal properly, but it was very cool being able to make it bleed on demand. I just had to blow my nose hard. My best stunt was the day I was made to sit next to the nastiest boy in class because he couldn't behave with his mates - he fainted.
oh dear....i don't know if i feel too sorry for the little guy to really love the pic?? But i do love it, it really jumps out at you on the pop page (congrats by the way). That one lone tear just gets me!!! Fave, and i hope he is all better:)
@rich57 - when I smashed my own head open, I motioned to get my camera but because of all the blood on my hands, I didn't want to get the camera all manky, so I washed my hands first and at the same time, stupidly washed my face. The resulting shot was neater then I wanted. :(
