The Bloody Nose by rich57

The Bloody Nose

Year 2 Day 272

Wasn't sure whether to post this but it was one of only two shots I took today and also seemed appropriate for the artist challenge. The story is that we'd just left school full of the joys of the festive season when Jack took an accidental whack in the face from his sister's lunch bag (which had a thermos inside!). He is rather prone to a good nosebleed ( http://365project.org/rich57/3rd-album/2011-07-10). Anyway in case anyone's worried he looks a bit upset he did want a photo taking so he could see how he was looking and it helped him be a brave boy. The other photo I took was a few minutes later of him back to his normal bouncy self ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/rich57/6522007169/in/photostream)!
shwew... i thought he had a coke problem for a min. glad it was just an accident.

really great pic, btw. awesome he let you take it. :)

that's pretty intense. I love the B&W. I tell my kids that bloody noses and black eyes make you look like a bad-ass. :)
December 16th, 2011
This is a Life Magazine photo! I love it and that tear is so absolutely perfect. A fav!
December 16th, 2011
Ouch. I prefer the after photo. I'm sure he was a brave boy, although he does look like he#s about to cry. aaw.
December 16th, 2011
@fueast He was just stopped crying. A lovely passer-by stopped and said Santa would bring him a new nose for Xmas and if he didn't she'd get him one off eBay!
December 16th, 2011
@sdpace Yeah I went BW partly because the blood looked so brutal in colour!
December 16th, 2011
I have a few shots of my boys like this and they also don't mind me taking them - after the trauma, they like to see how 'bad' it was and it makes them feel brave. Poor lad. Makes a powerful shot!
December 16th, 2011
Oh, poor Jack! Ususally I love his funny faces, but he looks so sad here with the big tear rolling down his face. Poor guy. Glad the recovery was quick.
December 16th, 2011
Poor guy, Touching photo! Really wants me to go out and buy a new nose for him!:-)
December 16th, 2011
looks quite harrowing! fair play...for posting
December 16th, 2011
edgy photo! hope he is OK
December 16th, 2011
Brilliant expression in b&w. You're cool Jack! And you have a cool t-shirt too :-)
December 16th, 2011
@azza_l Yeah thought about it first. Jack was ok with it going up. Tbh it's not often I get a chance to photograph such rawness (thank god). But now I'm kind of committed to this lark it seemed almost wrong to not post..funnily enough I was thinking on my way to pick the kids up that my project is quite far from unsettling. Not that I'm planning on looking for a new direction!
December 16th, 2011
Sorry for your son. But I have three boys and someone always getting hurt and they get over it. Tell him he looks awesome and nice pic!
December 16th, 2011
@michaelelliott Yeah! It's all character building!
December 16th, 2011
Looks like the poor lad's been in the ring with Tyson (err boxer not his sister)..
December 16th, 2011
Ouch! Sorry about your son, Richard! Being a father of two girls, this would have played out so different! :) hope he's feeling better!
December 16th, 2011
@andycoleborn Haha. My grandad was called Michael Tyson!
December 16th, 2011
awww bless him, it's amazing how resilient children are :)
December 16th, 2011
You've outdone yourself richard. This is by far the best portrait i have seen 365 project (and flickr/picasa etc for that matter) to date. such a great capture. your boy is mighty brave too!
December 16th, 2011
Bless, bless, bless - that tear is so sad! And if we didn't know the background you could tell a great story about street kids with it! Our Christmas holiday treat is taking my son to get his nose fixed - there are only so many major nosebleeds you can take a week even when they do get you out of assembly. Big Fav for me and I'm off to the other pic to cheer myself up!
December 16th, 2011
PS I hope Santa's taken note of Mia's Christmas list - it's quite a bit shorter than most!
December 16th, 2011
A classic moment.
December 16th, 2011
hadn't noticed Jack's tear on the iphone mate... turns this into a really powerful pic (even more so if no explaination would have been included...)
December 16th, 2011
@andycoleborn Yeah it was the tear that did it for me too!
December 16th, 2011
WOW really intense image. Fave from me.
December 16th, 2011
Poor wee thing - v. brave and great portrait.

December 17th, 2011
good processing, makes a good photo, if a tad distressing.
December 17th, 2011
"Accidental whack from sister." Yeah, my sister said they same thing when she gave me a good flogging. Glad Jack is ok.

December 17th, 2011
Poor Jack but he's a true model! Wanting his photo taken even though it must've hurt! Look at that tear....

December 17th, 2011
Great shot! Congrats on the pp
December 17th, 2011
You documented the situation beautifully. The tear is what caught my attention. Great kid you have and he will really like the candidness of this shot later on ...loved the after shot as well...all is well that ends well...
December 17th, 2011
this is part of a child's life.
he is a brave boy and makes me remember my nose bleed era.
glad they stopped.
he sure does look happy in the next shot.
December 17th, 2011
ouch that's an amazing shot, really captures childhood traumas - and he's made the popular page too with a bloody nose - if he manages to damage the blood vessels badly enough you can get them to bleed on demand pretty much

@judithg I managed to do my nose in, accidentally, really bad knock as a teenager, and it took forever for the blood vessels to heal properly, but it was very cool being able to make it bleed on demand. I just had to blow my nose hard. My best stunt was the day I was made to sit next to the nastiest boy in class because he couldn't behave with his mates - he fainted.
December 17th, 2011
oh god i love this! beautiful capture.
December 17th, 2011
Wow, that is an awesome capture! The tear makes it and the B&W looks amazing. Great job and brave Jack :)
December 17th, 2011
oh dear....i don't know if i feel too sorry for the little guy to really love the pic?? But i do love it, it really jumps out at you on the pop page (congrats by the way). That one lone tear just gets me!!! Fave, and i hope he is all better:)
December 17th, 2011
Congratulations, young man. You made the number one position on the homepage. Look for yourself on the top 20 this week. :-)

December 18th, 2011
Sorry to hear, but glad he is better.
December 18th, 2011
brilliant catch
December 18th, 2011
Glad to see in Part 2 that he and his sister are still able to get close to each other. That would have been a declaration of war in our home :)
December 18th, 2011
Sangeeta's son saw this last night.. he just sais "sick"... As he's 16, I dunno if that means good or bad...!!!!!!!

January 12th, 2012
Just saw this in the people thread and went 'wow' a bit. Excellent.
March 22nd, 2012
OMG!
March 29th, 2012
@rich57 - when I smashed my own head open, I motioned to get my camera but because of all the blood on my hands, I didn't want to get the camera all manky, so I washed my hands first and at the same time, stupidly washed my face. The resulting shot was neater then I wanted. :(
