Gopher Turtle, Attempting to Cross the Road

Saw this gopher turtle attempting to get down from the curb to cross the road. I tried to persuade it to go back to the woods, but it kept trying to step off the curb. After several cars stopped to watch, a gentleman got out of the car and picked it up and carried it across the street and set it down on the ground, where it scurried on off into the woods on that side.
What a fascinating creature!

Awesome image! It isn't completely known why, but once a turtle is on the move it will continue in that direction until it reaches it's destination. Regardless of obstacles.

Great photo of this big guy. I do like people who do deeds like this..... We're tortoise enthusiasts, in fact have two California Desert Tortoises we rescued about 48 and 50 years ago.....One we found in the middle of a boulevard in Whittier, fortunately, no traffic at the moment.

@nearlyincontrol @mlwerkheiser @rontu @terrinorthwind @aglennc @jgpittenger Thanks everyone. Wow, Anita. That's a long time to have pets like that. But guess they are pretty low maintenance. These turtles/gophers burrow down in the ground and spend a lot of time underground.

@rickster549 Our two would like to do that for winter hibernation, but we put them in boxes with crumbled paper and put them on a low shelf in the garage. If/when we have rain and they are burrowed they could drown. (Friends had one who did!)

@aglennc Wow, never thought about that. That's pretty cool to be able to put them in the boxes and keep them during the hibernation cycle.
