Looks like we may be down to one chick. This guy swam so close to my kayak that I lost sight of him "under the bow". Adult were about 2 feet away on the other side.

Protected? I believe so. No legal hunting season and I believe that molesting them is against the law. Good question. I'll look into it and let you know for sure.
@maggiemae
Maine prohibits the sale of lead fishing sinkers, which can kill the birds, and has 200-foot no-wake zones along shorelines to protect nests. Like I said before, No hunting.

Cats and rats aren't really a concern around here, but other predators certainly are: snapping turtles, hawks, even, I've heard, large bass.

Thanks for your kind comments. Wish I had better news to report. Neither chick survived. Found both adults circling and calling overhead. Finally landing, but no sign of the little ones. I'd really hoped, after their first nest got flooded out, that their second attempt would be a success. Can't imagine they'd try a third brood in one year but will stay with them as long as their here.
Awwwww, this is soooooo cute. Hope the little guy makes it. You must be quick off the mark with your "shooting" to catch these wonderful images. Keep it up.
Eva,
Sadly he didn't make it and the adults have headed out for the season. As for being "quick off the mark", my best piece of photographic equipment is the rudder on my kayak. The only way I be really quiet and still while maintaining my position in the water.

Thanks, Myrna!

My pleasure!

Indeed he was. Living on in memory only, now. C'est la vie.
Like Bartles and James, "I appreciate your support!" ;-)
