I spotted this critter on a little clump of twigs, moss and mud adjacent to a small (maybe 50 foot diameter) island that the loons like to nest on. Too small to present a danger I think. (Hope) Because of the wind I repeatedly paddled around the island and let the wind blow me close enough to take pictures. Getting a clear shot between the brush wasn't easy. I finally floated up right next too him and steadied the kayak by holding onto a small branch with my left hand and shooting with my right. So much for manual focus!
@mandyj92@lynnb Thanks, Lynn and Amanda. He isn't as large as he appears and I don't think the loons have to worry. I'm guessing maybe 2 to 2 1/2 feet long and less than an inch in diameter. Frogs and small fish may be more likely meals?

Thanks, Tony and Carol. I was sure fortunate that despite the windy conditions "he" decided to sit still for me even when I grabbed onto the brush less than a foot away. Guess he just wasn't willing to give up his place in sun. Can't blame him.
