Sometimes you just want to curl up in a ball. No roly polys were injured in the filming of this theme shot......... Armadillidiidae, Armadillidium vulgare.
I had to "relocate" one of these guys from a high traffic room to a low traffic room this last weekend. Was afraid to toss him out into the cold. There's not many bugs I'd say I loved, but this one would come close. I might feel differently if I knew more. Wood louse? Hmmm... Doesn't paint a pretty picture.
In Kansas, as a child, we called these "roly poly" bugs. Somewhere down the line, after moving to a few states and growing up a bit, I started hearing some people call them "potato bugs". Not sure why, maybe they eat potatoes?
Dear Robert,
First: I love roly polys! Second: your whole album is AMAZING! Beautiful pics and filled with information! Third: I am soooo putting ou on "speed dial" when I have nature related questions. Can't wait to see what you find next :)
