Pachyrhynchus

Another beetle, this is a weevil in the genus Pachyrhynchus. The dots are made up of photonic crystalline arrays, similar in structure and appearance to opals. A stack of 20 images processed with Zerene Stacker and Topaz Clarity plugin in PS5.

there is a group of men high up in the Mountains of PNG that wear beetle shells in their huge hats. Awesome stuff.

Humans thought they were pretty clever when they came up with photonic crystals, but, as usual, Nature was there first. Great photo !
