Found his hiding place! This Nutria or coypu is a river rat ,a large aquatic hamster type rodent . Taken at Lake Mattemuskeet wildlife drive.

They are related to the capybara and guinea pig. Major pest in many parts of the world. Native to South America, they were imported as fur animals and many escaped or were released into non-native environs.
