St. Mary the Virgin Aldermanbury Chapel by rosiekerr

St. Mary the Virgin Aldermanbury Chapel

As a nod to the UK members on 365... Now located in Fulton, Missouri, this Church, St. Mary the Virgin Aldermanbury, had stood in London since 1677 when it replaced an earlier structure that had sat on the same site since the 12th century. It was designed by Christopher Wren. The chapel was badly damaged during the London Blitz. It was moved stone by stone to Westminster's campus and rebuilt to Wren's original specifications.

This is the site of Winston Churchill's famed "Sinews of Peace" speech, where he famously intoned "An Iron Curtain has descended upon the continent." President Harry Truman, from Independence, Missouri (near Kansas City), introduced Sir Winston.

Fulton, Missouri, is the home of Westminster College (where this building now resides). It is in the middle of Missouri, in the middle of the US. What a journey.

What a wonderful collage. Great how it marks such a significant speech from a word master. It's great how buildings can be moved and 'rebuilt'. There's a museum back home in Northern Ireland where they've moved buildings from all over Ulster to recreate the past.

Lovely collage. I knew this building had existed in London but had no idea it had been rebuilt. For some reason I thought it had been destroyed in the blitz. Delighted to hear it has such a good and caring home.

@jaynspain @swilde @vickisfotos Thanks for visiting. :)
@ceilidh I agree... for some reason, it tickled me to think of Sir Winston traveling all the way to the middle of Missouri to make a speech about the Cold War.
@thistle Actually, it was destroyed, apparently, then rebuilt here. They really are taking lovely care of it.
@ukandie1 Thanks for taking the time to take a look. :)

@tosee @danette @tstb Maybe a little dry, but it's fun finding unexpected European history in the middle of the Midwestern prairie. :). Thanks for taking time to read!
