I think that a good macro shot can be almost anything. Here I see the tentacles of a squid as well as a succulent. Nice choice on the b&w.

Very cool homage to the original. yours is very close, I think -- definitely seems to be an agave. The main difference to me is that hers has a stronger contrast. I like the way you've captured the form here...will have to check out the challenge.
