This is a bristlecone pine tree trunk, as seen on Mount Evans, outside of Denver. I really loved how the knots in the trunk made it appear as if the tree had life and was peering out at the world, for these many years.
This is a Rocky Mountain Bristlecone Pine. These trees thrive just below the tree line, between 5,000 and 11,000 feet. They grow very slowly, hence the tiny spread between their rings. They are known to be some of the oldest living things on the planet... one bristlecone, in California, is over 5,000 years old. Many reach 3,000 years old. Truly, a life span to give one pause.
