Not a particularly colourful bird but a rare sight in my garden. I was pleased to see this little fellow and I'm not sure what type of redpoll he is as there are Lesser ones and common ones but whatever he is, I like him and he was welcome to my feeders. The blue tit has been to look in the box again and I just wish he would make up his mind and move in. However, it's too early really to being rearing young so perhaps he is just waiting for the optimum moment!
Thanks for getting all 3 of yesterday's shotson PP. It is always very thrilling to see them there. However, I must extol the virtues of Padlock's kingfishers yesterday. Do have a look at them as he has spent so much time (about 7 months) looking for them and his images are absolutely stunning. They deserve to be top of the Top Twenty this week so please Fav them and get them there.
Lovely shot, Rosie, great to see them in your garden, I've not had any for a few years now, but they are a delightful little bird. I suspect it is a Lesser Redpoll, which is commoner than the Common or Mealy Redpoll. It's difficult to tell from just this one shot, but I think it's also got a pale stripe over its eye, which would point towards a Lesser.
There is a third Redpoll which visits us as well. This is the Arctic Redpoll, but they are easier to tell as they resemble little balls of fluff.
@markp Thank you so much for the information and also the Fav. I can always rely on people like you to supplement my knowledge as I haven't had time to look in my bird books.
cute little guy! we usually see them in winter in big numbers but they haven't arrived here yet so maybe they by-passed us this winter. always nice to see rare birds at your feeder, isn't it!
