I just had to post another one of the whitethroat. He was so clever trying to draw my attention away from his nest yesterday by landing on a briar nearer the ground and when I focused on him, he flew into the nest. Clever little chap! We had a nasty big bird in the garden today who stole one of the baby starlings who was perched near the suet block in the lilac tree. He flew off with the poor bird in his beak and I couldn't get outside quick enough to make him drop it! I think it might have been a jay although it seemed a bit bigger than that but definitely wasn't a magpie. It was so quick though. I felt really sad for the poor bird's parents who have done so much to bring him up but of course that's nature!
Lovely photo...and I just witnessed the same thing..Crows...DARN them...there it was on my garage roof holding down the starling while killing it...I tried to scare it off but it grabbed the nestling and just moved to my neighbour's roof to finish the job!! All the starling family were screaming and flying around but it didn't bother the crow.
Love the shot here...big fat grub in his mouth. Yes, they know how to try to distract us away from their nests. Clever. And so sad about the baby bird. I knew jays might eat eggs, but not carry off a bird! fav
Love the grub! I tell you, I've been watching nature at its best and worst. When I see a hawk swoop up a bird, or a chipmunk destroy an entire nest of eggs, my heart sinks. I've got the wrens in the back now and I'm in knots. Sure hope they survive. This is a great shot. Love how the birds do all they can to distract you from the nest.
