St Mary the Virgin, Merton by rumpelstiltskin

St Mary the Virgin, Merton

This beautiful church dates back to 1115, and was Admiral Lord Nelson's place of worship until he set sail for the Battle of Trafalgar. Keen gardeners might be interested to know that John Innes is buried in the graveyard. He was a landowner in Merton, and bequeathed money to horticultural research, so his name lives on in the UK through the sale of John Innes compost!

Amazing that the church doesn't look as old as it is. I like the wooden structure.
The history is interesting.
