"We cannot hold mortality's strong hand" - Shakespeare (King John, IV.ii.82)

This is one of the graves in Croydon Minster's churchyard. The headstones are very worn and hard to read, but I think this particular memorial was for an 81 year old woman. Similar gravestones nearby date from the 17th Century.
This reminds me of a shot I took when all I had to shoot was an old church and graveyard. All the faces on the old graves had worn away like your cool example, but these all looked like aliens - like this: https://365project.org/humphreyhippo/2014/2014-04-11

funny enough, this has a better definition in the thumbnail. in large though the eye can make out the head of the cherub and its wings. a very fine example of texture that translates well in black and white. fabulous!

Nicely shot, classic gravestone of the era

@humphreyhippo Gosh, that really does look like an alien! I wonder how the grave looked before it became so worn.

@summerfield Thank you so much! I wasn't sure if there was enough contrast for the angel to be visible - funny how it seems clearer in the thumbnail!
