Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte (Church of Our Lady of The Hill)
Adam Ferreira was the first person to be born in Madeira and in the 15th century he built a chapel on the site where the Church of Our Lady of The Hill now stands. The chapel was destroyed by an earthquake in 1748, and was replaced by Our Lady of Monte in 1818. The church contains the tomb of Charles I, Austria's last Emperor. He sought exile in Madeira after trying to reclaim the Hungarian throne in 1921, but died a few months later from pneumonia, at the age of 34. Zita of Bourbon-Parma, his 29 year old widow, survived him by 67 years. She never remarried, but with eight children to raise, one assumes that her days were rather busy.
