Jane Austen's grave and memorial plaque at Winchester Cathedral
The novelist Jane Austen died in Winchester in 1817 at the age of 41. She was buried in Winchester Cathedral in a (relatively) plain grave that did not mention that she was a writer. The popularity of her novels increased after her death so the cathedral paid further tribute to her by adding a brass plaque and a stained glass window.
