Southern Masked Weaver by salza

Southern Masked Weaver

Saw this chap in the garden today. His one leg looks lame but he did not seem at all bothered by the fact that he only has one usable leg! When eating seeds off the ground every so often he would open his left wing and place the tip on the ground for balance.
Beautiful yellow. Great catch

Great shot! I don't think I've ever seen one before, so this is a treat. Great capture. It's amazing how they just adapt and move on!

What a gorgeous bird! Never seen anything like it before.

@olivetreeann @egad This guy is a common resident in our area, seen daily. In fact they will sit in the trees around the house and make such a racket demanding seeds get put out. This is a breeding male, the females and non breeding males have only the slightest hint of yellow, don't have the black mask and eyes are not as bright a red.

Love the detailing. Glad to know he's unphased ... maybe he's a Redbull drinker! :)

Ah my 2nd fav bird, we have about 6 weaver nests in the trees in our back garden, I love to sit out there & watch them in Summer :)

Awwww, shame, poor little bird! But it's a great shot, we get these masked weaver birds here in the Eastern Cape too!

Beautiful shot and handsome looking bird. Looks quite healthy so his leg must not be too much of a problem. Living things have a great ability to overcome adversities and find their balance in life.

@peterdegraaff Just saw that! Have been racking my brain for your challenge....

such a colourful shot!

@salza Ok for your challenge I would like to see some photos taken from Groot Winterhoek Mountains which looks down into the valley where you live. Often you take photos of the mountains looking up from the valley or Tulbagh, but not of the magnificent views which must be up there. I noticed you have taken photos on pass across to Ceres but these don't look down into valley or along the line and fall of the mountain range to show how these rise from the valley steeply. I imagine that from up on high one could see the fields and vineyards. Ironically we drank a South African Shriaz last night. If this challenge is too difficult or weather is no good, perhaps a low key still life.

What a great shot and a lovely looking bird.

@peterdegraaff This should be doable. Will just get permission to go onto some of the farms at the top end of the valley! The weather is due to clear so that shouldn't pose a problem either. We made some Shiraz last year (also made Pinotage) both are rather splendid, even if I say so myself!

His leg, OUCH, looks like it would hurt a lot! Beautiful face and plumage. 8)

@myautofocuslife Livia, from what I could see the leg is just totally lame with no obvious sign of injury and he really did not seem at all bothered by the fact that he only has one good leg! He was also chasing other birds away from the seeds that we had thrown down and he was eating!

@salza Sounds like he's doing all right! 8)

nice capture and sounds like he's able to adapt despite his injury.
