@taffy I just had my 18-55mm kit lens with me. I am looking to upgrade my kit lenses but at this point really have no idea to what! I cannot say I can best advise you on this one!

@taffy Thanks. One thing I would suggest taking along is a polarising filter. I bought one whilst I was visiting but only towards the end of my trip. It would have been marvelous to have had it when we visited Grand Canyon and Yosemite National Park!

@salza I just read your message -- great minds think alike -- I just bought one today for my 50mm on impulse when I walked by the camera shop. I have one on my 24-85 and love it.
