@automaticslim Well followed your instructions as best I could. was a tad confused at times since Gimp and PSE don't use the same description for some of the actions! Drove myself dilly and at times thought thought you had seriously lost it! But here is the finished shot and there definitely is loads more texture! Thanks for pushing me almost to the brink, but only teetered on the edge! I will try this again :-)
definitely a black and white kind of shot. the texture is more defined and the subject does not struggle for attention with the background. i love this!

Yay! - so pleased that worked out! It's a bit counterintuitive at times so I'm not surprised that you doubted my sanity, especially when a layer seems to make things worse. Anyway, full marks and a fav for perseverance, and I hope it'll be that bit easier next time. :-)
