KnickKnacks by salza

KnickKnacks

This display is in a speciality bread shop in Tulbagh which is only open on the weekend. They use stoneground flour and Amasi to make their breads.

Amasi (so called in Zulu and Xhosa, and "maas" in Afrikaans) is the common word for fermented milk that tastes like cottage cheese or plain yogurt. It is very popular in South Africa. Amasi is traditionally prepared by storing unpasteurised cow's milk in a calabash container (igula in isiZulu) or hide sack to allow it to ferment. The fermenting milk develops a watery substance called umlaza; the remainder is amasi. This thick liquid is mostly poured over the mealie meal (maize flour) porridge called pap, or drunk straight. It is traditionally served in a clay pot (ukhamba in isiZulu) and eaten with wooden spoons. - info from Wikipedia

oh heavens! Amazi is something I've always avoided at all costs! Lovely little bits n pieces - especially the middle row of cups. There's something about the comp I don't like - maybe because it's so centered? - but can't quite explain. Sorry, cos that's no crit help at all.

@kwiksilver Gillian I think it might be something to do with the perspective. To me it appears skew and almost out of proportion. I liked all the bits and bobs so decided to post it anyway!

Interesting to read your comment re perspective -- it does look like a tricky shot to do from below.

I think the shot shows the symmetry of the display. It's one of those scenes where the items look practical, but they're not actually in use. So I like the static view.

LOL here's another county ringing in on the composition. Yes, the bits and bobs are very interesting to look at but the perspective and composition is a bit off. To balance that out, if I was working with the picture (it's your next wwyd entry!) I make a choice and crop it to enlarge one side or the other of the shelves with the cups in the center put off to the side. I'd probably choose the side with the graters because of their texture. I'd do my best to keep it slightly off center using the angle to pull the viewers eyes across the picture. I wouldn't worry about including the things on top of the shelf but I MIGHT leave a hint of them in there if it didn't make the picture look top heavy. But coming in tighter I think that would make for a stronger image, but not loose the interesting aspect of what's on the shelf or the colors which are very attractive.

Such interesting information on the bread they make- sounds like it tastes really good even thought the ingredients are not your typical flour and yeast kind.
