I visited one of my local libraries today. Didsbury library is a grade II listed building which opened in 1915. John Henry Price, the architect of Didsbury Library, described it as; 'designed in the fifteenth century gothic style with tracery windows and emblems of Science, Knowledge, Literature, Music and Arts and Crafts in stone distributed over the building'.
A very grand building for a library! I wonder, though, given its age, how comfortable it is to work there.
I used to work in an old Carnegie built library and it was very drafty!
@maaikel "a palace for books and art" - nicely put - and yes, it's a lovely place. Thanks :o)
@dulciknit Yes, you could be right - haven't noticed it being too chilly inside, though .. the desk is right by the front door, though, so that must get a bit drafty!!
@stevieflow I live near Withington library, which isn't quite as grand as this one .. Chorlton library is worth a photo, though .. and as for the old John Rylands building in town, that's fab!
like Cheetham hill library, which has perished, since become some African food market or somekind of ethnic shanty town, damn shame, beautiful architecture and the names of writers carved into its stonework.
