You like my hat? by sarasdadandmom

You like my hat?

I was working a small parade for Labor Day on Sat,when this sweet gentle 90 year old lady approached me. It was 100dg and it was stifling hot. I was in uniform blocking traffic with my hat off. This lady noticing that I was folicly challenged ( bald) said " Officer, you need a hat like mine." She told me that her mother gave her that hat 50 years ago and then proceeded to model it for me. I wanted to take her home.
I loved how she moved the conversation into telling me about her hat. LOL. I disregarded all the other shots I took, because she deserved her own blog shot.
Yes, very much!

She sounds like a cute little lady!! Beautiful portrait.

I bet 100 is hot when you are in your uniform. It has been getting to 110 or higher here but at least I can wear shorts.
September 5th, 2011
She most certainly is a cutie! But I have to say, you posing in her hat would've been priceless! ;)
September 5th, 2011
What a nice picture and story.
September 5th, 2011
Move over Minnie Pearl! (You do realize that only us old folks will catch the meaning of this, don't you?) I'm thinking that a hat like hers might look pretty silly with your uniform! :)
September 5th, 2011
What a great story! Love it! She looks so great for 90 years!

@krazykatt thanks Matt
September 5th, 2011
@nana Yes it would look silly, but if she would have asked me to try it on, you bet I would have done it. LOL
September 5th, 2011
@aj1268 Well Paula, If she would have asked me to try it on, I would have done it immediately. LOL
September 5th, 2011
@kerristephens Yes it was hot, and the uniforms are dark blue. Yay !!!
September 5th, 2011
What a great story. I hope I can attend a parade in 100 degree weather when I'm 90! She's a sweetheart.
September 5th, 2011
@denisedaly Me and you both. The asphalt temp was 160
September 5th, 2011

September 5th, 2011
Fantastic shot i bet she made your day x
September 5th, 2011
Too funny! I'll bet she has a lot of stories to tell. We don't listen to the experienced folks enough!!
September 5th, 2011
what a sweet ol' gal .
September 5th, 2011
You'd look great with a hat like hers lol And 90 year old?? You gotta be kidding me! I wanna get to my 90's like that!
September 5th, 2011
Great shot Terry , it is so easy to focus on all the bad stuff in our jobs isnt it , but so refreshing and uplifting on those occasions we meet people with character and zest for life !!!
September 6th, 2011
I love both the story and the cute little lady. The hat is in great shape for being fifty years old! Do you keep your camera with you on duty?
September 6th, 2011
@lisjam1 I am shocked that you would even ask a question like that. I took the same oath you did.. " I will always have my camera with me as a 365er" I would have my camera with me if I was going into surgery. LOL
I too thought the hat was in good shape. She was so happy that she could show it off to someone. There is a lot of bad things to my job, but days like this make it worth while.
September 6th, 2011
@timw I just answered Lisabell with those same words and looked up and saw your comment. Yes it makes it worth while Tim. She desperately wanted to tell someone about that hat. I am glad it was me.
September 6th, 2011
@deniseescovino I think you will make it and still be beautiful. You have what I call the Zest for Life.
September 6th, 2011
@nikkers She sure was Nik
September 6th, 2011
@pfmandeville Pam, you are so right, several years ago, I video taped my wife's 90 year old grandmother, telling her life story. It was like a living history book.
September 6th, 2011
@geertje She sure does
September 6th, 2011
@timw Terry always seems to find the good in people. That's what I like about him.
September 6th, 2011
@sarasdadandmom I'm just trying to envision where you stow a camera with all of the other equipment your job requires you to wear on your person. Do you have a holster? You might shock a bad guy into submission by "drawing" your camera and yelling "stop or I'll shoot!".
September 6th, 2011
@lisjam1 After all the years of finding bad, it is refreshing to look for the good, thanks my friend.
September 6th, 2011
Great story, love that after 50 years she is still using the same hat.
September 6th, 2011
@lornavale she was something barb
September 6th, 2011
@lisjam1 Actually, I keep it in my car and my car is always near me. however we wear something called a squad suit or BDU"S that have the side pockets along the leg. So when I get out , I slide it in there. Good question though.
September 6th, 2011
What a great shot! Love the story to go with it :)
September 6th, 2011
@loey5150 Thanks Lois
September 6th, 2011
love her - and love her glasses too! It is neat that she let you take her picture.
September 7th, 2011
LVoe it! You know how much I love ladies in hats. I want to be one of those ladies when I grow up. lol
September 7th, 2011
@sassyinthecity You will never grow up, I hope
September 7th, 2011
Oh, how incredibly sweet. I want to take her home with me too. And I want to spend the whole time talking about her hat. And her mom. Precious.
September 8th, 2011
@hiddencreek Exactly what I felt. Thanks , I like your passion for people.
September 8th, 2011
She's adorable! And you are a sweetie to take the time to talk with her. Bless you!
