Childhood

It is school holidays here now, and this is in the very poor part of the township. There were children playing everywhere on the streets when I drove through, as that is the only place for them to play. They have no gardens. I had to be incredibly careful - but what a joy to see all these kids playing outside with their balls and homemade "go-carts" instead of playing with electronic games like the richer kids. To me, this is what childhood should be all about. This is my childhood - being resourceful and making my own toys. This little guy's wheel came off, but he was all smiles when he saw me pointing a camera at him, and then he sat there in the road to repair his little cart. I felt a kind of "one-ness" with him, although I have now grown up to be a lot more privileged.
He looks like he's happy with his lot.. it's what I like seeing kids do as well.. I still have happy memories from my trolly and grass sled..

@julzmaioro Yes he does look happy - that's what made me feel this is what childhood is all about. This carefree play. He was obviously thrilled when he saw me stop and photograph him

That smile is a heart breaker! Wonderful to see such enthusiasm and delighted you could make his day by taking a shot of him.

Fabulous photo Desi...his smile is so infectious! I think he felt the "oneness" also.

What a great shot!! I agree...kids need to be outside, using their imagination and being creative...which he clearly is.
