One of those blue sunny days, albeit with a definite winter chill in the air. So I was caught by surprise when my scruffy little Holly decided to take herself paddling in the river just where she saw a pile of rubble. I guess I should flip the photo - they say you should always walk from left to right, but that doesn't seem to feel right
Sweet shot. I’ve never heard that rule?! What I have heard is that the subject “should” be moving into the frame...which Holly is doing very nicely. But all rules are made to be broken 😉
@jesika2 Thank you Jesika. Holly has always loved swimming at the beach or in the river ... she loves to go into water knowing there is ground under her feet and she can control the depth.
@narayani Thanks Narayani. Not sure if it is a rule about walking left to right, but it is certainly something from local camera club judges .... I guess that is one of the good things about camera club. It has taught me to think a little bit more about my composition
@bf2016 Thanks Barbara. I didn't like the colour shot and it was almost a deleter as the late afternoon sun was directly behind Holly. No time for me to change my own position to shoot from the side. So that meant her body was shaded and the contrasts were too poor for even normal BW. Making it High Key was a way to rescue it and get my YOTD shot for today! LOL. Now the truth is out.
Lovely shot. I like it very much. It does not matter which way she is moving. What matters is placement within the frame and you have done it well. Here's an abstract on motion and left right orientation in images. There are some gems of information in it but it's dense. I recommend it if you ever have trouble falling asleep. :D https://www.bertamini.org/lab/Publications/BodeBertaminiHelmy2016.pdf
@meotzi Thanks for that article, Caryn. Had a brief glance through it and it actually looks very interesting, so I have saved it to be able to read at my leisure.
@anniesue :) Indeed it is - but a quick glance at Caryn's link seems to be telling me that in movies most directors in the Western World do have movement happening from left to right. So maybe there is something in it after all. Understanding the psychology appeals to me, so I will definitely read the article in more depth. (and perhaps report back in future images?)
