Dikkop / Thick Knee by seacreature

Dikkop / Thick Knee

Saw this dikkop acting very strangely whilst walking past on my way to the marina this morning and realised he must have chicks because he kept running out in front of me - trying to entice me to follow him away. Sure enough when I stood still and just looked there was Mama Dikkop and some little chicks darting around everywhere. Although my dogs were on leads and weren't attempting to chase the birds, I didn't stay around as that might just stress them unnecessarily
Such sweet birds. Are you breaking rules again by going to the marina?? Don’t get yourself arrested Desi!

@narayani . No I do not believe I am breaking the law walking to the marina as he didn't mention marinas. I am not even sure whether or not walking to the path alongside the river is actually breaking the law or not? The regulation goes as follows:- "– All beaches, dams, lakes and rivers. inclusive of all recreational facilities at these places, are closed to the public". There are no recreational facilities at the marina, nor on the path alongside the river so it is not a place where people congregate to put out their towels or beach umbrellas to laze in the sunshine, nor to picnic. It is simply a path used by fishermen/yachtsmen to access their jetties, and by people like me to walk. The strange thing is, Western Cape provincial government sponsored a post on Facebook encouraging families to picnic out in the fresh air instead of congregating indoors - but yet all places with recreational facilities are closed to the public so I made a comment on their post asking if we are supposed to picnic in the parking lot at the local shopping mall

@koalagardens thank you very much. Not at all artistic - no nice background. But the bird is where it is ...so well camouflaged in fact that I didn't even see it until it moved

@pattyblue thank you. Yellow legs with thick knees! They are officially now called Thick Knees. But they used to be classified as Dikkops. I still like the old name.
