Smoke break by seacreature

Smoke break

I have seen this guy working on this old tub for a couple of months now. He's been stripping it down - cutting out and carting away masses and masses of rusty steel and rotten timber. So today as he was having a break I stopped and chatted to him for the first time ever, telling him I've been photographing this old boat deteriorating for the past 10 years so I am so glad it now appears to be being restored as I see new paintwork starting to happen, not just removal of scrap. He seemed really surprised that anyone would have been watching this particular boat. His uncle recently bought it to use for his church. They want it to be a place of refuge for the drug rehabilitation program they are involved in. There will be dormitories below decks, as well as a kitchen and restaurant, and a place to hold church services on the deck. The boat will move from the fishing harbour up river to Velddrif
What an amazing transformation!

That’s an innovative use for an old boat!

I love your men at work shots. This one is so interesting with all the shapes and textures of the wood and the colours are great too.
What a lovely project too, so nice to see that it's going to be used for something so positive.

@anniesue @narayani Thank you. It will be interesting to keep an eye on progress. When I first saw him working I didn't know if he was just trying to salvage what he could - great to know that it is the boat that is being saved not just some of the contents being salvaged.

What a fabulous shot and narrative! I think you will still be taking shots for a long time, there seems to be so much to repair! What great plans they have for it.

That'll be an interesting photographic story to tell.
