One of a series of shots taken of the Angel of The North this morning.
Rebecca, Sam and Ben are stood beneath the wing.
The Angel of the North stands on Low Fell, near the A1 south of Gateshead.
It is a sculpture made by Anthony Gormley, and unveiled in 1998. I cannot believe that there were groups organised to stop it being built. I find it one of the most beautiful pieces of art that I have ever seen. It captivates me whenever I see it.
It was built at Hartlepool Steel Fabrications and weighs 200 tons. The body weighs 100 tons and each wing 50 tons. It can withstand winds of 100mph thanks to the 600 tons of concrete that anchor its foundations.
The Angel is 66ft tall and its wings are 177 ft across.
We had an interesting conversation about its gender. I think female, Rebecca thinks male. Perhaps it is neither.
I have several more shots that I will post in my other albums over the coming days.
@bobfoto Yes Jason, just the one full size. Their are a few maquettes of it, and one stands in the Sculpture Garden of the National Gallery of Australia.
Great picture, what an amazing sculpture. I thought it looked familiar I have a photo of this sculpture on the 21st March, the one in Canberra is only about 6ft tall though and there is no plaque with a description, now I know what it is called, I walk past it 3 or 4 times a week.
This is so much better thank my attempt: http://365project.org/gphelps5/365-additions/2012-08-18
