Like all old British cathedrals, Peterborough is full of history.
As you can see, it contains the resting place of Katharine of Aragon, Queen of England from 1509 to 1533.
Katharine was a woman of great compassion and conviction. She comissioned the book "The education of Christian Women", whose main point was that women had a right to education. She also did a huge amount for the poor.
She was also the first ever ambassador in European History when she held the role of Ambassador for the Spanish court in England.
She was banished from court when Henry VIII annulled their marriage so that he could marry Anne Boleyn. The repercussions are still apparent in England almost 500 years later as the Catholic Church and Church of England are two distinct organisations. The Church of Englands has recently voted to allow the ordination of woman bishops. I wonder if the catholic Katharine would approve of this were she alive today?
When she died at Kimbolton Castle in 1536 she was mourned by the English people, many of whom still saw her as their Queen.
Not only was she a woman of her time, but it seems that she would fit in to our society today and feel that she had work to do.
I did not know that much about her before I took this shot for 365. That is one of the beauties of this site, it challenges us to find our more of the world and its rich history.
Totally in agreement with you regards our subject knowledge of our photos, interesting to know how much extra time each one us spends in search engines after we have finished our images. Research, history and learning about what we have seen on our travels.
Even more interesting when we realise what we don't know about our local environment :)
I love the way you've captured the shadows here Sean. This is a great image Fav
The narrative is very interesting thank you for taking the time and trouble to add it.
Super image (fav) and wonderful information about this amazing person. I too am challenged into discovering more about my photographic subjects, 365 does that to you Sean, quite right!
Marvellously lit with beautiful shadows. In the UK, the TV dramatisation of Hilary Mantel's novel Wolf Hall has just started, and it begins with Henry VIII trying to find a way to get his marriage annulled
Love this photo and agree with expanding our personal knowledge of the things we take shots of and, in return, we educate one another about the the world beyond our personal reach.
Thanks for the history lesson... I'm studying for my Life in the UK exam at the moment, and she crops up regularly, so I've learnt so much already. This was great to read!
@seanoneill Well Sean, it's my own laziness and procrastinating really. I've been here 16 years already and got permanent residence after 5 years [could've been 4 years, but again, my laziness.]. But now we really want to do some travelling and the only way is with a passport... no point renewing my SA one as we're never going back so yeah - applying for citizenship is the way to go. Wish me luck. :)
@seanoneill Thanks Sean. As long as I get more than 75%, I'll be fine. Some of you locals have enjoyed trying out the tests with me. If you want to give it a go, here's a link to some practice test papers: http://www.theuktest.com/life-in-the-uk-test/1
there are some great shots from the cathedral Sean, especially in the closer details, but, for me, this is the one!
Yes, all is well here thanks although I've not actually been 'here' too much so far this year. Just had a count up and I'm on six different countries and nine flights in 2015 already. Steff said that when she last saw me I didn't have a beard!
I love the shadows here. Never actually managed to get into this cathedral, special service etc. Fascinating insight to katherine. Havnt got past the details of her and Henry.
