Preston Bus Station ~ 1 by seanoneill

Preston Bus Station ~ 1

I've had a manic couple of weeks, Sam has let home for Bristol, Ben is back in Canterbury and we have an empty next. Today is the first day since 1996 when I have been home alone with a sense of permanence to it.

I was fortunate to indulge my love of Brutalist architecture on Saturday when I got a behind the scenes tour of Preston Bus Station. Built 50 years ago, we nearly lost this magnificent example of Brutalism, but enough people made a fuss that it has been restored and is as magnificent as ever.

For my first shot from the day I am not going to highlight the magnificent 50 year old clocks and the cavernous waiting areas with their exposed concrete, lots of glass and lots of light. Oh, and throw a bit of street photography and a return to my B+W style in as well.
This is Brutalism.....is that a made up word by you or it’s a proper name? I should have googled first!
Well you are up in my part of the world...wish I had known! Preston Bus Station is so controversial....hated by some but more & more are beginning to see its style & originality. I used to get my bus to school in the old bus station but I have never caught a bus from this replacement. They are supposed to be making gardens along the tiers I believe but they never seem to get on with it!

@happypat Yes, Brutalism is a thing, connected with the architecture of concrete. People like Le Corbusier It has a beauty and starkness of its own. It gets its name from the Breton word for raw concrete, which is Brut. I was in Preston for about 3 hours, there and back in a day, but I will be back for the exhibition about the Museum at the Harris Museum. I will let you know when I am coming back.
