I went with a fellow photographer to the Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory today. We spent 3 hours there - I took almost 1000 pictures but there are quite a few with the butterfly that was there is there no longer - they are very fast movers! We only saw one of these beautiful black and green butterflies.
It looks like the Cairns birdwing butterfly, a species of birdwing butterfly endemic to north-eastern Australia. If you go to Kuranda just north of Cairns you are likely just to see them flying around. the main wings are exactly the Cairns birdwing...but I cannot see if there are spots on parts of the lower wings that are covered by the large top wings.
