This is a closeup of a little snake (possibly a baby) that my dad found at the bottom of the steps this afternoon. We're not sure what kind of snake it is but we think it's either a garter or a copperhead. Kudos if you can identify the snake or what the heck it might be doing there! Also, I can assure you it is in fact ALIVE!
If you could mention round about where in the world you live (country, continent), it would help with identification, snakes vary greatly country to country... but whatever snake it is, snakes are cold blooded, which means they need external sources of warmth to keep them alive. That's why you'll so often find them resting on bricks, cement, stone... cause the sun heats these surfaces, and they remain warm for many hours, so cold blooded animals can get their warmth by resting on them! So that is probably what he was doing there. I live in South Africa, and after a hot day we must always be careful before stepping on hot/warm surfaces.
@sfeldphotos Did some creative Googling, and I'n 99% sure it's Dekay's Snake... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storeria_dekayi
Google image Search "Dekay's Snake" and you will see many photo's of snakes almost exactly the same as yours! :)
It's not a copperhead. If it were, you would see a definitive change around the neck area. Since it's straight, it's not poisonous. It could be some sort of Rat Snake.
i agree with @carolpre .Also,a venomous snake would have pupils which appear slit.From what I can see this ones eyes have round pupils.Simply beautiful creature.Nice capture!
Great capture, even though seeing this made me jump back from my computer screen. I am not familar with Dekay's snake, but I know this is not a copperhead. Thank goodness, since a copperhead is poisonous. The garter snakes here have stripes down their sides, but I know there are variouis types of garter snakes.
