Going, going, but not quite gone

After a few days with no rain (well hardly any rain) most of the pools and puddles have drained away or dried out, leaving patches of sticky mud. It will take a while for this one to disappear. It covers almost half of one of the lowest fields in the shallow valley behind our home, and no doubt receives the water that is gradually draining down from the fields further up the hill. I suppose it’s a bit like one of those scary problems we had to solve at school – if water is draining into the pool at X litres a day, and the pool is draining into the river at Y litres per day, how long will it be before Shepherdman’s dogs stay dry?
