We leave the dead Jerusalem artichoke stalks and seed heads as a winter garden decoration – the tall erect stems and spiky tops add a bit of architecture to the garden, especially when sprinkled with frost. This year we have had few substantial frosts, and the wind and rain has left the various brown stems in the garden looking distinctly bedraggled. It’s time for me to get out there and so some chopping back, in preparation for spring. But maybe I’ll wait until it’s just a bit warmer – the log burner still seduces me to stay inside with a good gardening book.
