A few weeks ago a flock of sheep appeared in the “cow’s field”, which is normally empty of all livestock throughout the winter. As was the case with the surrounding fields the “cow’s field” was distinctly soft, and distinctly puddly in places, but at least with only the occasional dog walker making use of the pasture, the grass remained green and the ground mud free. The presence of the sheep changed all that – within days most the grass may still have looked green, but it hid squelchy mud, and there were large areas of mud beneath the bare trees where the sheep had tried to shelter from the repetitive rain. The sheep were soon moved out again, leaving tufts of wool in the hedgerows.
